About us
The Herk Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to supporting music education programs in Mississippi. Through scholarships, grants, and opportunities to experience music, the foundation aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the arts. It was established in memory of Fred Earl Jones, nicknamed "Herk," who served as the band director at H.W. Byers High School (Sand Flat) and was a passionate advocate for music.
The foundation’s mission is to enhance the appreciation of music and performing arts within the North Mississippi community and surrounding areas. It achieves this by offering young people access to educational music programs, scholarships, and other initiatives that empower the next generation of musicians and performers.

On May 20, 2026 at Oxford High School, Calandra Jones-Howard presented the 2026 Fred E. Jones Memorial Scholarship Award ($1000) to Miss Siobhan Ray.

Congratulations to The Herk Foundation!
The HERK Foundation is honored to receive a major grant from the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi. This support will expand our impact on community music programs and, for the first time, allow us to send students to band camp. We are deeply grateful to the Community Foundation and the sponsoring Lipscomb family for their generosity and commitment to supporting music education. |
